Panchak word has come from 'Paanch' (meaning five), which means a period of nearly five days every month during which Moon transits from Kumbha (or Aquarius) & Meen (or Pisces) rashis respectively. Any auspicious work may not be started during Panchak. Panchak is of near about 4 and ½ days. During this period constructing roof, travelling in the south direction, breaking wood, making roof on house or shops, purchasing furniture etc. is prohibited. The period is considered bad and no major activities are performed during the period. Panchak June 2011 dates are from June 20 to June 25. Time-- Panchak begins at 14:39 on June 20, 2011. It ends at 14:23 on June 25. Auspicious events like Marriage, Mundan, welcome of a new bride, Upnayan sanskara are prohibited during this period. The Panchak Nakshatra is not considered during the festivals of Raksha Bandhan and Bhaiya dooj.  If in somebody's house a person dies during this period then five wooden statues should also be burned along with the dead body of that person. During death, 5 statues of flour or grass are made and placed Shaiyya of dead. Then cremation is done and Shanti Path is performed.  Dhanishtha (Last two parts), Shatbhisha, Purvabhadrapada, Utrabhadrapada and Revati are five Nakshatras principally four and a half Nakshatras are known as a Panchak. In some places, the first held of Dhanishtha Nakshatra is considered inauspicious.
