The Lingam is carved out of a rock, the chipped away pieces are thrown away but the lingam is put on a pedestal and worshipped,  so is the chipped away rock any less than the rock in the diety. So it is not the rock but some symbol that the rock represents.
The symbol is so revered that any stone which is shaped like a lingam became swayambu that is self created.  So it is respected more, why is that so? Is it because it is self made, that is a person who becomes self aware on his own efforts with out any external support becomes a swayambu.
